Outsider Music Live would like to invite you to their April 2024 performance event, featuring songs, music, videos and live performances to celebrate the wonderful ideas created by the ‘OML’ group during the OML Music Therapy Programme.

The project is based on participants’ own stories and experiences, as told by them and developed into music and performances centred around a collective once monthly live event.

The aim of the OML Project is for participants in previous programs with newly engaging members from the mental health community and general wider community to come together with new referrals as a face to face group, to develop their skills as peer leaders, whilst using their creativity to work on their music ideas, moving towards a once monthly live performance, to celebrate the songs and music they have created.

For patients, music can reduce the isolation which for many has been increased by the perceived stigma of their ongoing mental health experiences. It also plays a positive role in mental health recovery, strengthening confidence and self-esteem. The project’s community focus adds an element not readily available to people who have experienced severe difficulties over a number of years, often including hospitalisation.

The songs and performance pieces describe some of the tragedy, fun, chaos and isolation of their day to day lives.

Jon Hall (OML) uses his skills as music therapist and record producer to work alongside and support people with a wide range of professional resources. The group have been working individually and supporting each other in this journey of personal expression.

Previous participants have called the OML project a great success, stating that the live events at the end of each month gives them the chance to ‘celebrate the sound of my own voice’ and the ‘freedom to express myself’.

This event hopes to serve as a platform for people to share their own creativity and no longer feel isolated. In doing so, this live performance gently invites the public to think differently about their own and others pain, confusion, wonder and curiosity.
