Last Tuesday, the Antwerp was transformed into a vibrant hub of Irish culture for a traditional St Patrick’s Day celebration. From the rhythmic steps of dancers to the aroma of slow-cooked stew, the evening was a heartfelt tribute to the Emerald Isle.

Crafting and Community

The festivities began with a touch of history and craft. Joy dressed as St Brigid to promote the event, even taking the time to teach guests the delicate art of making St Brigid crosses using raffia. This hands-on experience set a communal tone for the night, guided by Gerry, who spearheaded the proceedings and organised the evening including a colouring competition for the children.

A Feast for the Soul

No Irish celebration is complete without a hearty meal, and the Antwerp team delivered. John, Gerry, and Nick spent the day preparing a massive spread of Irish Stew, Cabbage & Bacon, and Mac & Cheese, which was served to all guests for free. Meanwhile, Destiny and the pub team ensured the atmosphere was pitch-perfect with festive decorations and a steady flow of Guinness.

The Sound of Ireland

The air was filled with music throughout the night. Michele hosted a special open mic session focused on Irish tunes, complemented by two sets from traditional Irish musicians. If you missed them, you can catch these musicians practicing at the Antwerp every Wednesday evening.

From Crouch End to Chicago

The undisputed highlight of the evening was the performance by the McGuire Marrow Dancers. Their skill was breathtaking, and the pub wishes them the best of luck as they head to Chicago in three weeks to compete in the Global Irish Dancing competition.

Beyond the performance, guests had the chance to dive deeper into the heritage of the movements they saw. Anne McTagart shared her extensive research, allowing attendees to discuss and learn about the rich history of Irish Dance.
