We are excited to collaborate with Haringey Fixers Social Cinema to bring you two films. The second is Moonlight

MOONLIGHT, 2016, BARRY JENKINS

Instantly heralded as a modern masterpiece, Barry Jenkins’ stunning three-part story of queer identity is both a technical and an emotional marvel. The film presents three stages in the life of the main character: his childhood, adolescence, and early adult life. It explores the difficulties he faces with his identity as a Black homosexual man, including the physical and emotional abuse he endures growing up. Featuring incredible performances from the entire cast, Moonlight also is responsible for bringing the wonderful Mahershala Ali to global attention - now a 2-time Oscar ® winner.

And who can forget the Best Picture envelope mix up at the 2017 Academy Awards? Cinema For All had just that week agreed with our partners Altitude, the rightsholders at the time, to make Moonlight the first day-and-date title we would offer to community cinemas and film societies – meaning that for the first time, volunteer-led cinemas could screen the film in the same window as theatrical venues.

The Monday after the Oscars, the phone was off the hook with groups submitting their bookings. This was the first time the movement was able to take advantage of a moment like that, to be part of the global buzz and excitement around the drama at the Oscars, and to ensure community audiences got to see the film when excitement was at its height. As a result, Moonlight is the most booked film via the Booking Scheme of all time - and what a film it is.

‘It’s both an ode to the filmmakers that Jenkins loves, like Wong Kar Wai and Claire Denis, and an ushering in of a new kind of cinema. Film history in the future will be hugely indebted to Moonlight.’
